Racing Icon Frankie Dettori's Bankruptcy Battle: A Shocking Update (2026)

A significant setback for racing icon Frankie Dettori has emerged as he grapples with an overwhelming bankruptcy situation, now burdened by a staggering £765,000 tax liability that he cannot settle.

This prominent jockey disclosed last March that he had declared bankruptcy following his involvement in a tax avoidance scheme, which has since led to this financial turmoil. His emotional response was clear; he expressed feelings of sadness and embarrassment when his companies, Frankie Dettori Limited and Newmarket Activities Limited, were liquidated.

Recent reports highlight that Dettori is unable to fulfill his tax obligations to HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) totaling £765,542, along with an additional debt of £6,391. According to the Racing Post, a statement from the ongoing investigations indicated, "Assuming that realizations and expenses are as anticipated, it is not expected that there will be a return to unsecured creditors due to insufficient funds." However, they also noted that this outcome could change depending on the final results of their inquiries.

Fortunately for Dettori, he is set to automatically emerge from bankruptcy in March of this year, which would discharge him from any debts encompassed within that bankruptcy declaration.

Despite efforts by Dettori and his legal team to keep his identity confidential during a tax tribunal in 2024, he was ultimately named in public court documents after a challenge from media organizations and HMRC.

When discussing his situation, Dettori insisted that the tax scheme he engaged with had received prior approval from tax authorities. He explained, "A few years ago, I employed the services of professional specialist tax advisers to manage my family's financial affairs. A structure was created and I was told that it had been approved by HMRC." He went on to clarify that he had since parted ways with those advisors.

Dettori mentioned that his former advisers have been actively working with HMRC to identify solutions for his financial difficulties. He expressed, "Regretfully, I will be filing for bankruptcy. I am saddened and embarrassed by this outcome and would advise others to take a stronger grip on their financial matters. Bankruptcy is a major decision, and its repercussions will influence my life for many years to come. I feel relieved to be closing this chapter, allowing me to reset and concentrate on my international riding career."

In October 2023, this legendary jockey bid farewell to Britain with a memorable final race at Ascot, where he previously achieved fame during his remarkable Magnificent Seven victory in 1996. Following his retirement announcement in the United States, Dettori and his wife Catherine departed for a new life overseas.

Continuing to compete in America, he embarked on what appeared to be a farewell tour before announcing his retirement there. Nonetheless, he still plans to participate in races in South America, with his final rides scheduled in Brazil at the beginning of next month. Afterward, he will take on a full-time role as a global brand ambassador for Amo Racing.
