Van, who is set to defend his title against Tatsuro Taira at UFC 327, expressed his frustration with Kape's behavior. He believes Kape has been less than truthful about their negotiations, particularly regarding the timing of the potential fight. Van's manager and Mick Maynard were reportedly in discussions for a March 7th bout, but Kape's public statements suggested otherwise, implying that Van was the one dragging his feet.
"I like Manel, he's a good guy, but he's been lying too much," Van said. "I don't hate him, I respect him, but he needs to be honest. When they first offered the fight, it was for two weeks, and then March 7th. I was the one pushing for it, but Kape tried to turn it around on me. It's stupid; if you don't want to fight, just say so."
Despite the apparent misunderstanding, Van remains focused on his upcoming fight and is confident that he will eventually face Kape and other contenders in the division. He downplays the public spat, stating, "I have nothing against the guy; it's just the fact that he lied."
Kape, meanwhile, is set to face Kyoji Horiguchi at UFC Vegas 119, a rematch from their 2017 Rizin FF bout. This fight is expected to determine the next title challenger. Van's comments highlight the challenges of managing expectations and maintaining transparency in the competitive world of MMA, where a simple lie can have significant consequences.
